Visiting the Yorkshire Museum

Opening times


We are open daily from 10am – 5pm, except for 25 and 26 December, and 1 January, and will be closing at 2.30pm on 24 and 31 December.

Please note that the Medieval York gallery will be closing on 20 February, 2012, to prepare for our new exhibition 1212: The Making of the City which opens on 7 April.


The gardens are open daily from 7.30am, except for 25 December. From late October until late March, they close at 6pm, and during the summer months they open later into the evening.

Entry to the gardens is free. The Gardens are closed on the mornings of 7 February, 21 April, 2 June, 10 June, 11 June and 14 November, 2011, for Royal Salute ceremonies.


Every Saturday 11.30am – 2.30pm. Entry to the observatory is free.

The York Museums Trust Pass

This ticket covers entry to both the Yorkshire Museum and to York Castle Museum, plus 10 per cent discount with all purchases over £5 in both museum shops, plus York Art Gallery shop.

Come Back For Free

Tickets are valid for 12 months, at no extra charge, so you can come back as many times as you like for a year.

Tickets are personal and not transferable so we just need to take your name and address (this information is not passed on or used for marketing purposes) and you may be asked for ID on your return visit. If, for any reason, you don’t want to give your name and address, day tickets are available at the same price.


Pushchairs are welcome and there are baby changing facilities on the Lower Ground Floor.
There are activities for children in all the galleries.

Picnics can be eaten in the Museum Gardens outside.


We welcome Guide Dogs, no other animals are allowed entry to the museum.


Photography for personal use is allowed around the museum, but there may be restrictions during special exhibitions, and the use of tripods may be restricted when busy.

Please seek permission in writing from the Museum Manager if you wish to take film/video footage for personal use.
